Crystal Hartsfield, Principal

Welcome back for the 2021-2022 school year. I am excited to return this school year to five days of in-person instruction with the option of virtual instruction. Let me introduce myself to those who are new to our building. I have spent my entire professional career with Richmond  Public Schools beginning as an elementary school teacher, preschool teacher, then served as an instructional Coach and for the past two years as principal. It has always been my goal to build lasting relationships with students and parents at Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Preschool and ensure equity and equality for all. To build upon that, the theme for this school year is "One School, One Family, Building Strong Foundations." Our goal is to establish positive relationships with students and families.

Last year was a successful year for our school because our students and staff worked hard to achieve their goals in spite of all the challenges with virtual learning. Our amazing teachers worked tirelessly with students and families to achieve great success. This success was achieved through lots of hard work, dedication and persistence. As a school, we will strive to challenge our students to reach new heights in their educational experience. We will build upon our success and look to achieve even greater heights this year.

This year we will renew our commitment to excellence in all that we do, as we seek to provide quality class instruction daily with expectation that all students can learn and succeed. We will continue to implement initiatives to promote teaching and learning, and to engage all our stakeholders in the process of educating our students. I am excited about all that this new school year has to offer and look forward to working collectively as a family to ensure that our students are provided with the best educational experience possible to be Kindergarten ready.

Parents, your support and involvement are vital to your child's success so I encourage you to come join us throughout the year whenever possible Please keep in mind that due to Covid-19 pandemic we will have various safety procedures in place to keep our students, families, and school staff safe. This year will look very different from any other. Due to the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic we will continue to implement mitigation measures as established by Richmond Public Schools. This will include the requirement for all students where practicable, and regular handwashing and/or access to hand sanitizers. All visitors to our campus will also be required to wear masks. Follow the Preschool Family Handbook & the RPS Direct Newsletter for further guidance. We welcome your suggestions that will help our school become even better!

Again, I am thrilled to serve MLK Tiny Titan family this year and appreciate your support! The staff is looking forward to a successful, productive year building relationships! I encourage parents and stakeholders to become active members of the MLK Tiny Titan family team. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance to you.

Warmly,

Crystal Hartsfield
